I want to talk about your family photos, but before that, a little bit about me…  I am a family and newborn photographer in Albury Wodonga, i’ve been photographing families for over 7 years but most importantly, I am a mum to three beautiful children, aged 6, 4 and 2!  So yeah! I tend to worry about how my children might act in public sometimes!

I think its the fear of being judged or just having them do something completely dangerous or break something in a shop, something disastrous. Right?

I stress over it even though 99.9% of the time they’re ok, I like to think for the most part they are OK kids!

So I can understand the stress of booking family photos!

Your investing so much money into this experience, into these photos.

I don’t care if you’ve got one, or 5 kids, but I think as parents we worry about the outcome of a family session, because we don’t want the time and effort that we put in to organising everyone and the investment, to have your children not want a bar of the family photos when its time to actually do the session!

What you really want is your family photographer to produce images that you’re going to want to keep on your walls for many years to come, so naturally our kids to be happy!!

All of these cute little things are what you want to happen at a family session and it’s natural to have the worry that your going to do the session and get all the perfect outfits and get the perfect location perfect photographer and then only to get there and have your kids not want a bar of it!!!

So, I have been thinking on this worry and I want to put your mind a little bit at ease!

I want to tell you something that might shock you about my family photo sessions!!

ARE YOU READY??

At least 60%-70% of my family sessions have a child/children who at some point who do not want to be there or do not want to play the game that we’re trying to get them to do.

Kids get tired! and they just don’t want to be told what to do sometimes!

But I can tell you right now that I am acutely aware that CHILDREN RUN MY SESSIONS. Yes absolutely, 100% run my sessions!!!

They completely dictate the way in which the session runs because if your child isn’t having fun and enjoying the experience then news flash, nobody will enjoy the experience!

(Ever tried to enjoy the sweet sound of a tantruming two year old as you conduct your shopping while they writhe around in the trolley fling shit off the shelves? Yeah exactly no parent can enjoy themselves when their kid is loosing it.)

And I love it this way because I know if I am paying attention to your children and how they’re reacting to what I’m asking them to do, then I know we’re going to have a good session regardless of their mood when they come in.

I absolutely cater to the kids in the session and only do what they’re comfortable with.

What I never do is push kids to do something to the point where they’re in meltdowns and not wanting to have anything to do with what we’re doing or anything to do with their family! (BIG NO NO!)

So with all this mind, I wanted to bring you a long and show you some photos from a session where one of the kids in particular wasn’t having a really good day on the day of the session.

Mumma Paige told me that she had just come from a full day of preschool which we know tires kids out incredibly!

So miss Carly had just come from a full day preschool then Mum had had to drive a fairly long way to get to her session that night and we were in a particularly long grassy spot which is beautiful for photos but Carly really didn’t like the feel of the grass on her legs.

So she was being carried for a ot of the session by mum.

When we wanted to get the some family shots, because not only do we have Carly but we had her older brother Riley as well, so I wanted to get mum with both kids.

We sat down and Carly able to sit on Mum’s lap so the grass wasn’t touching her kegs and we also got some shots of the three of them standing up together mum holding Carly. It Worked beautifully!

So there were a few times during the session where we tried to get Carly down from Mum with some distractions.

I asked Carly to play a little game of ring a rosie with her brother Riley, which did work for a very brief while, (lucky my camera is quick!) So we got some really cute shots of that and we also managed to convince her that it would be really cute to have a photo with her with her brother so she stood next to her brother while they had a cuddle.

In fact there were the only THREE times during the whole hour of our session that she popped down from Mum’s arms or mum’s lap!

So the third time, we got Carly down from mum was in order to capture mum with Riley, which was probably the easiest part, I asked Carly to come and help me take some photos of mumma!

So I picked up Carly in one arm and with my other arm i was able to capture some really gorgeous shots of mum with riley too! (Should have got a shot of this, lucky I am a mum and used to doing a lot one handed! )

Now the other BIG positive from this was that all carly really wanted to be close to Mum! Which is ADORABLE for photos! So we got the best most gorgeous photos Carly and Mum Paige together! Absolutely love!

So my hope in writing all this out is to show you the types of amazing photos that we still can achieve EVEN if you childs had a long hard day, EVEN if they don’t really want to be there.

I am so used to dealing with children, and working around their needs and I think as a photographer, thats just so important!

So I hope i’ve put some fears to rest guys! My aim this year is to bring you guys more behind the scenes content so you can see exactly how I work with kids and families at my photography sessions.

If you’re now a little less worried about booking in your family photos, then get in touch with me!

I would love to capture all the things that make your family YOUR FAMILY. I have some beautiful area’s to photograph in around albury wodonga, we will choose somewhere amazing and have a wonderful fun filled evening (Yes you might even enjoy yourself!)

I can’t wait to hear from you.
