So you've booked your portrait session with Albury Wodonga Newborn and Family Photographer - Captivated Photography ;) OK. With A photographer... And now you're stuck on how you're going to dress your family for your session. Don't worry I have created a really simple guide to choosing your wardrobe and don't worry it doesn't mean going out and buying everyone a new outfit!
Step One: Get Inspired!
You probably already have heaps in mind for your families session, but it never hurts to look up what other's have done before you!
Pintrest is a great resource, luckily, I have created a board with examples and images of some past clients of mine who really nailed it in the clothing department for their session! We never want clothing to be the centre of attention, we don't want it to be distracting from the people within the image, take a look at my pintrest board here, and see what I mean about these gorgeous sessions.
Step Two: The Checklist
Now before you go off to the shops or raiding your wardrobe have a quick read and make a mental note of the following little check list to keep in mind when you're selecting your outfits!
1) No shirts with big logo's or writing across them - people's eye's are automatically drawn to these big loud shirts, especially any writing, so to keep the focus on your beautiful family leave the logo shirts for everyday wear. (This goes for kids too!)
2) Choose muted colours and tones - think pastels, dark blues/greens/reds, any shade of beige, cream etc work well.
3) Keep it blended, but not identical - we're not here to audition for the perfect family, we all know most families don't walk around in matching white shirts and denim jeans ;) we want you to look cohesive and blended yes, but we also want you to look natural, comfortable and relaxed!
4) Be Comfortable and Be Yourself! - if you don't normally doll your self up with a pretty dress and accessories then don't do it for your session, the most important thing above all is for your family and you to feel relaxed and for me to capture the true essence of your family, we can't do that if you're uncomfortable in what you've chosen to wear, be beautiful perfect selves. I can't ask for much more than that!
Step Three: Open Your Wardrobe
So now you've had a good look at what other's have worn to their own family portrait sessions, and you probably already have a little mental list of outfits that might work. So the next step is to get into your wardrobe and lay out the outfits together.
Seeing all the outfits laid out will help you know what is and isn't going to work.
And if you absolutely must.... a shopping trip wouldn't hurt if you need a extra pieces to complete the look ;)
So that's it!
When you book me to capture your family's portrait you're also more than welcome to send me some photos and examples of what you're planning to wear to get my professional opinion.
The last thing I want to say is DON'T STRESS and don't over think it! The below image is one I took of my two girls, clearly I did not plan to take this image, nor did I plan for the total adorableness of the final product. We had been in the car for hours and pulled over at a service station just as the sun was setting. After a massive day of 4 hour plan flight and already 2 hour car ride the girls were looking less than perfect ;)
It has still turned into an absolutely beautiful image despite it breaking all the rules! I even have this one printed and framed as a sample image in my studio! Because as a mother, I LOVE IT!
So the message is don't stress because when it comes down to it you're going to love your images for the people in the photograph!
